Exposed! Swimsuit Exhibition at WA Museum - Nov 21 to Feb 7, 2010
See How Swimsuit Fashion has Changed Over the Years
It was quite by chance that the bikini swimsuit got its name. Just days after the US began atomic bomb testing in the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean in 1946, a French fashion designer cleverly adopted the name "bikini" for his new two piece swimsuit collection.
The naming was a stunt aimed to take advantage of the massive publicity runoff created by the testing, but the name clearly stuck and went on to create a great deal of controversy of it's own over the years.
New Swimwear Exhibition
Exposed!, a new exhibition dedicated to the history of the swimwear opens at the WA Museum on November 21 and runs through to February 7, 2010. The exhibition traces the origins of the swimsuit from it's prudish beginning to the cheeky styles of today, and explores it's significance to fashion, sports, and society's views on the female body.
Swimwear Fashion has Changed Significantly
This exhibition hits the spot as Australia's sun-worshipping beach lovers have a deep vested interest in swimwear. Pre-dating the bikini launch, one of the first real scandals in the world of swimwear actually occurred in Australia. In stark contrast to the heavy pantaloon style of swimwear favoured at the time, Annette Kellerman dared to wear a figure hugging full body swimming suit, creating enormous outrage. Her story is featured in the exhibition, along with examples of ever changing swim wear styles.
Time for that New Swimming Custume
It's now that time of year when most Australians start thinking more about the beach and the pool and what they'll be wearing when getting wet this summer. Some may be ruefully thinking about alternatives to the bikini or skimpy budgie smugglers, but many will be trying to find a swimsuit that really shows off their svelte bodies to maximum effect.
Featured Australian Swimsuit Designer Collections
Australia now has some great swimwear designers, the collections of some of which are featured in the Exposed!. Look out for a collection of black one-piece bathing suits inspired by Annette Kellerman, made especially for the exhibition by influential designers Jets, Seafolly, Zimmerman, Tigerlily and Anna & Boy.
